To revive ancient Greece and integrate it with the national identity was Ludwig I's central idea. For his Gallery of Beauty, the artistic Bavarian king had Lady Spence portrayed as Sappho, the great poet and singer of antiquity, with laurel wreath and lyre. Beauty as an expression of veracity was expressed in the harp concerto by Francois-Adrien Boieldieu (1775-1834). The highly educated friend of Ludwig I, Marchesa Marianna Florenzi, is accompanied by the Florentine Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842) and his Sinfonia in re maggiore.
Franz Liszt (1811-1886) had allegedly dedicated a sonata to the saucy Lola Montez following a passionate night. "Liebestraum", in the life of the king was followed by a bitter "Tristesse", as expressed in Chopin's Etude in E major.
