In the centre is the flute-playing Frederick the Great, who developed the Prussian court into an outstanding intellectual and cultural centre with his passion for music.
Works include Frederick's own composition, a sonata in E minor for the transverse flute, his teacher's, Johann Joachim Quantz's flute concerto in G major, Carl Philipp E. Bach - in Menzel's painting at the piano - with the double concerto for piano, harpsichord and orchestra in E-flat major, and others.
